Greater Love Hath No Man (1911)
Length: 13min References: IMDb Original project format: black & white, nemi short fiction
Summary: | Guy-Blaché, who patrolled her own studio grounds on horseback, proves her western credentials with this action-romance, which typically raises an eyebrow at contemporary conventions of masculinity and femininity. Here, we're way out west in a New Mexico mining camp, where men are men and sometimes the women are too. Florence is out to make her fortune in the gold rush: she carries a gun and pans for treasure alongside the men. Jake (veteran actor-director Romaine Fielding) is besotted with Florence but she doesn't return his feelings. Instead she falls for Harry, the new superintendent, the moment she arrives at the camp. When disgruntled Mexican miners threaten the scrupulous and handsome new boss with not just mutiny but mureder, Jake proves the import of the title with his heroism. This is a lively and effective western, albeit one shot in New Jersey by a Frenchwoman, whis focuses as much on relationships as it does ridin'-and-shootin' action. |
